Kuehn (Kino), Eusebius Franz, b. Nonsberg (Italy), Aug. 10, 1644, 
d. St. Magdalena (Mexico, shot), March 15, 1711; researcher and 
cartographer, Jesuit, missionary. Emigrated to Mexico in 1687 and 
founded the Jesuit missionary station of California. Mapped his travel 
route of about 20,000 miles, discovered the estuary of the Rio Grande 
and penetrated to the Colorado. Compiled geographical works in 
Spanish; proved Lower California to be a peninsula.
