Austrian Empire (1804-1918). On August 14, 1804 Franz II then 
still emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, proclaimed himself Emperor of 
Austria and thus established the Austrian Empire as a hereditary 
monarchy. In 1867 the "Ausgleich" (or Compromise) was reached between 
Austria and Hungary. In 1867 the Austrian Empire was converted into a 
Dual Monarchy; the western part of the Monarchy remained an Empire 
until 1918 and the Emperor was also King of Hungary.
