Kals am Grossglockner, Tirol, municipality in the district of Lienz,
alt. 1,325 m, pop. 1,272, area 180.54 km%%sup 2/%, tourist
centre (138,129 overnight stays mostly in the summer) situated in the
Kals valley to the south of the Grossglockner mountain, between the
Granatspitz mountain and the Schober mountains. - Sports hostel,
Kalserbach storage power station (built in 1950, 11.7 MW; power
station near Kals, storage facility near St. Johann). Starting
point of the first ascent of the Grossglockner peak in 1853; parish
church in Koednitz built in 1439 with Classicist alterations made
between 1818 and 1821 and frescoes from 1960, Romanesque filial church
in Grossdorf with a two-storeyed chapel and a Gothic spire; several
chapels and shrines.
