Kaolin, soft fine-grained clay, "china clay". The mining of kaolin
started at the beginning of the19%%sup th/% century. Originally it
was used in the ceramics industry, today it is mainly used as filling
material in the paper, plastics and paint industry. Mined at
Kriechbaum-Weinzierl near Schwertberg (Upper Austria, open-cast and
underground mining ) and in Aspang-Zoebern (Lower Austria, open-cast
mining). 1993 output: 341,956 tonnes of crude kaolin.
