Karate, Japanese defence technique and close combat sport employing 
striking, kicking and defensive blocking (traditional light-contact 
and full-contact karate). Dissemination in Austria from 1964. The 
Austrian Karate Association (Oesterreichische Karate-Bund, OeKB) was 
established in 1965 and comprises 104 clubs with a total of 8,620 
members (as of 1993).
