Karlstein an der Thaya, Lower Austria, market town in the district of 
Waidhofen an der Thaya, alt. 442 m, pop.1,596, area 
48.87 km%%sup 2/%, in the upper Thaya Valley. Karlstein is the 
home of the only technical and vocational school for watchmakers in 
Austria, a social centre (Sozialer Hilfsdienst Thayatal), and an 
upper-level secondary school of technology; industries include 
building firms and the production of precision mechanical parts. From 
the 18%%sup th/% century, centre of watch and clock manufacturing; 
castle (documented mention in 1112, altered in the Late Middle Ages 
and in the 16%%sup th/% century%%sup /%).
