Skittles (ninepins, tenpins), traditional game of bowling at pins, 
popular since the middle Ages, usually played in pubs. The modern 
competitive sport has developed since the second half of the 
19%%sup th/%  century: The Austrian skittles association 
(Oesterreichischer Sportkeglerbund, OeSKB), founded in 1935, also 
includes bowling with a round ball with finger holes; it comprises 615 
clubs with a total of 8,053 members (as of 1993).
