Kindermann, Heinz, b. Vienna, Oct. 8, 1894, d. Vienna, Oct. 
3, 1985, literature and theatre studies. From 1919 worked in the 
Ministry of Education, where he founded the Department of Adult 
Education, 1926-1936 taught literary history in Danzig, 1936-1942 at 
the University of Muenster, 1942-1945 and 1953-1969 Professor of 
Theatre Studies at the University of Vienna, where he founded the 
Institute of Theatre Studies. His ten-volume "Theatergeschichte 
Europas" (History of European Theatre, 1957-1978) has become a 
standard work. Co-founder of the M.-Reinhardt research and memorial 
centre in Salzburg.
