Kirchberg am Walde, Lower Austria, market town in the district of 
Gmuend, alt. 575 m, pop. 1,520, area 37.78 km%%sup 2/%, 
situated in the headwater region of the River Thaya to the southeast 
of Gmuend in the northern Waldviertel. - Woodworking; - Baroque parish 
church (1709-1713); castle (documented mention in 1172, re-designed in 
Baroque style around 1600) with a chapel (dome fresco by J. G. 
Schmidt); former All Saints Hospital (1715-1719) with Spitalskirche (a 
hospital with church dating from 1715-1719); pillory and Trinity 
column (both 1714); gallows (1743); House of the Hamerling Foundation, 
built between1891-1893 on the grounds of the house in which R.  
Hamerling was born, now town hall.
