!!!Klieber, Josef

Klieber, Josef, b. Innsbruck (Tyrol), Nov. 1, 1773, 
d. Vienna, Jan. 11, 1850, Romantic sculptor, medallist and 
painter. From 1792 lived in Vienna, where he worked in the studios of 
J. Straub, J. Schroth and M. Fischer. K. enjoyed the patronage of 
Prince Johann I of Liechtenstein, from 1814-1845 head of the 
school of engraving of the Vienna Academy, repeatedly worked with the 
architect J. G.  Kornhaeusel. The stylistic features of his figures 
corresponded to the Biedermeier ideal with their soft lines and 
subdued expression.

!Works
Numerous sculptures for the Weilburg castle in Baden, 
Liechtenstein Castle (both Lower Austria); Schottenkloster, Albertina, 
Federal Ministry of Education (all in Vienna).
