Coeducation, the joint education of boys and girls, which has been the 
rule in Austrian schools since 1976. The separation of the sexes in 
education, ordered in the 16%%sup th/%  century, was soon circumvented 
for organisational reasons (in rural areas it was not usual from 1869 
onward) and was only maintained where the curriculum (e.g. special 
subjects or school types for girls) made it necessary. In Austria 
today, all names of school types and curricula are so formulated as 
not to refer to any specific sex.
