Krafft, Johann Peter, b. Hanau (Germany), Sept. 15, 1780, 
d. Vienna, Oct. 28, 1856, painter of portraits and historical 
paintings. Studied in Hanau and under A. Tischbein and, from 1799, 
under F. H.  Fueger at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts; 1802-1804 
in Paris (studied the antique collection), 1808 journey to Rome. 
1823-1828 taught at the Vienna Academy, from 1828 director of the 
Imperial Picture Gallery at Belvedere Palace (Vienna). K. became 
famous through his portraits, battle scenes and military genre 
paintings; his work spans a wide range of artistic styles from 
pathetic-classicist Romanticism to realistic Biedermeier and 
influenced many painters, incl. F. G.  Waldmueller.
