b. St. Lorenzen bei Scheifling (Styria), Feb. 16, 1903, 
d. St. Lorenzen bei Scheifling (Styria), Nov. 28, 1971, farmer and 
politician (OeVP, Austrian People's Party); father of Josef  Krainer 
Jr. 1927-1936 Chairman of the Styrian Federation of Agricultural and 
Forestry Workers; 1934 member of the Styrian Landtag, 1938 imprisoned, 
1945-1948 Landesrat, 1965-1968 member of the Bundesrat (1967 
Chairman), 1948-1971 Landeshauptmann of Styria. K. was not only an 
influential politician at provincial level but also a high-ranking 
OeVP functionary at federal level. He was known as a vigorous advocate 
of federalism and reformer of the internal organisation of the OeVP.
