Cancer Research: The Austrian Cancer Society (founded in 1910 by A.
Eiselsberg and J. Hochenegg) launched the Institute for Tumour
Biology - Cancer Research in 1953 (its first head was W. Denk). On
the occasion of the 600%%sup th/% anniversary of the University of
Vienna in 1965 the institute was donated to the Republic of Austria
and was attached to the university school of medicine. H. Wrba became
its new head; he was followed by R. Schulte-Hermann in 1985. Cancer
research concentrates on epidemiology, oncological toxicology,
environmental toxicology, experimental cancer research (basic research
concerning virology, molecular genetics, biochemistry, gene
expression), immune diagnosis and immune therapy as well as growth
control of malignant tumours. The research institute works closely
with university centres in Vienna hospitals and with research
institutions in Austria and abroad.
\\
Research on cancer in children was started with the help of a public
collection campaign in 1986; this led to the founding of the
"Children's Cancer Research Institute", which operates a laboratory in
the St. Anna Children's Hospital in Vienna since 1988. This institute
wants to extend its work to the university children's hospitals in
Graz and Vienna as well.
\\
The Oesterreichische Krebshilfe, which emerged from the Austrian
Cancer Society, focuses its work on applied health research, on cancer
prophylaxis, early detection and after-care of cancer, including
personal counselling.
