War Victims: During World War I 1.2 million soldiers of the
Habsburg monarchy died on the battlefields and in prison camps. The
number of people that died as a direct consequence of war action
cannot be told exactly, but it is relatively low compared to those who
died of malnutrition and epidemics. In 1936 70,000 people in Austria
received invalidity benefits. During World War II many more
people were killed or injured in Austria (within the borders of 1937).
247,000 Austrians who had served in the German Wehrmacht did not
return from the war (76,000 were reported missing). More than 24,000
civilians were killed during air raids and during fights on Austrian
territory in 1945. More than 32,000 Austrians died as a consequence of
political persecution, 65,000 Jews fell victim to the racist frenzy of
the Nazis. In 1948 more than 400,000 Austrians received war,
invalidity, widow's or orphan's benefits, in 1997 their number was
still at 85,000 ( war victims' benefits).
