Krips, Josef, b. Vienna, April 8, 1902, d. Geneva 
(Switzerland), Oct. 13, 1974; conductor, first at the Vienna 
Volksoper, then in Aussig and Karlsruhe, 1933-1938 and 1945-1950 at 
the Vienna State opera, from 1935 taught at the Vienna College of 
Music and the Performing Arts (1939-1945 banned by the Nazis from 
conducting). Conducted works by Mozart at the Salzburg Festival, 
1950-1954 conductor-in-chief at the London Symphony Orchestra, 
1954-1963 at the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, 1963-1970 at the 
Symphony Orchestra San Francisco, 1970-1973 at the Vienna Symphony 
Orchestra.
