Art Universities (Kunstuniversitaeten) are institutions of higher 
learning devoted to the various arts. In Austria there are the  
Akademie der bildenden Kuenste in Vienna and another five art 
universities: The ''''Universitaet fuer angewandte 
Kunst</I''>(University of Applied Art)'' ''in Vienna was founded by 
the "Oesterreichisches Museum fuer Kunst und Industrie&quot; in 1867 
as a school of arts and crafts and won great renown thanks to R.  
Eitelberger and outstanding teachers such as J.  Hoffmann, K.  Moser 
and A.  Roller. In the period 1941-45 it was called "Reichshochschule 
fuer angewandte Kunst&quot;,  and in 1948 taken over by the Austrian 
state as an academy, raised to the rank of ''Hochschule ''in 1970 and  
university in 1998. The ''''Universitaet fuer kuenstlerische und 
industrielle Gestaltung'' (University of Art and Industrial Design) 
''in Linz was founded as the School of Art of the City of Linz in 
1947, made a ''Hochschule'' under federal control in 1973 and made a 
university in 1998.  These two universities offer the following 
courses of study:  architecture, sculpture, art education, industrial 
design, painting and graphic arts, textile working and design, visual 
media art, handicraft instruction; additionally, the university in 
Vienna runs courses for stage design, fashions, product design, 
restoration and conservation, while Linz offers courses on ceramic, 
metal and textile working.

of Music and the Performing Arts): In ''''Graz''''originally founded 
in 1816 as a school of music established by the ''Musikverein fuer 
Steiermark'', made a conservatory in 1920 (authorised to issue 
diplomas in 1927), 1939-45 "Staatliche Hochschule fuer 
Musikerziehung''"'', then Provincial Conservatory (with a seminar for 
music education, 1948), State Academy in 1963, ''Hochschule'' in  1970 
and university since 1998; branch institute at Oberschuetzen, 
Burgenland, since 1965. In ''''Salzburg'''' the university developed 
from the "Mozarteum" school of music (founded by the Salzburg 
Cathedral Music Association in 1841); supported by the "Internationale 
Mozarteumstiftung" society (founded in 1870), which strongly advocated 
establishment as a ''Hochschule. ''Public music school from 1880, 
converted into a conservatory in 1914, passed into federal hands in 
1922, "Reichshochschule fuer Musik Mozarteum&quot; from 1939 to 1945, 
reorganised as a conservatory in 1948, became the state-controlled 
''"Akademie fuer Musik und darstellende Kunst Mozarteum&quot;'' in  
1953, made a ''Hochschule'' in 1970 and a university in 1998. Since 
1981 the university has also operated a Department of Music Education 
in Innsbruck. In ''''Vienna'', ''a forerunner of the present 
institution was founded in 1817, when the "Gesellschaft der 
Musikfreunde des oesterreichischen Kaiserstaates&quot; initiated the 
establishment of a conservatory, which was gradually enlarged and 
taken over by the state authorities as an academy in 1909. After an 
interlude as "Reichshochschule fuer Musik&quot; (1939-45), it became a 
''Hochschule'' in 1970 and a university in 1998. These three 
Universities of Music and Performing Arts offer the following courses 
of study: bass tuba, bassoon, Catholic church music, clarinet, 
composition and music theory, conducting, double bass, guitar, harp, 
harpsichord, horn, instrumental and vocal pedagogy, instrumental music 
teaching, music education, oboe, organ, percussion instruments, piano, 
piano chamber music, piano accompanying, Protestant church music, 
recorder, saxophone, singing, transverse flute, trombone, trumpet, 
viola, violin, violoncello, voice, as well as all subjects in the 
field of drama and performing arts; in addition, the Graz University 
of Music and the Performing Arts teaches stage design  and jazz; 
Salzburg also offers courses in art and craft education, stage design, 
painting and graphic arts, music and movement education, textile 
design and working, handicraft education; the Vienna University of 
Music and the Performing Arts also offers courses in image technology, 
camera, script production, dramaturgy, production, direction, editing 
and sound engineering at its Film Academy, as well as music and 
movement education, and music theatre stage direction.
