!!!Kupelwieser, Leopold

b. Markt Piesting (Lower Austria), Oct. 17, 1796, 
d. Vienna, Nov. 17, 1862; painter of religious subjects, landscapes, 
historical scenes and portraits; father of Karl  Kupelwieser and Paul  
Kupelwieser. Painted in the classicist style of J. P.  Krafft, 
friendly relations with the circle around the composer F.  Schubert. 
Travelled to Rome in 1823 and joined the  Nazarenes; back in Vienna 
painted numerous altar pieces and devotional pictures. From 1836 
Professor of History Painting at the Vienna Academy, from the 1840s 
specialised in monumental painting. Created frescoes for the Johannes 
Nepomuk Church in Praterstrasse, Vienna and for the Lower Austrian 
provincial government (1848-1850)., Worked with J. von  Fuehrich on 
the decoration of the  Altlerchenfeld Church in Vienna and received 
numerous commissions for altar pieces and church frescoes throughout 
the monarchy.
