Kuruc Invasions: From the 15%%sup th/% century onwards Hungarian
revolutionaries called themselves "Kuruc" (meaning "carrier of a
cross"). In a rising against the Habsburgs under Ferenc II
Rákóczi Kuruc rebels attacked and devastated parts of
Lower Austria, Burgenland and Styria several times between 1703 and
1709. In order to protect Vienna a rampart was built in 1704 (along
the present-day Guertel road) and several earthworks were erected from
Lake Neusiedl to the River Danube.
