Landrat, 1939-45 chief official of a'' Landkreis'' (political 
authority of the 1st instance, corresponding to a district authority). 
His position was similar to that of a  Landeshauptmann in the Republic 
of Austria, but included certain powers of self-government (social 
affairs)..
