Landsknechtlaendle ("lansquenet country"), epithet of Vorarlberg in 
the late Middle Ages. Poverty forced many inhabitants of the area to 
join armies of mercenaries (lansquenets); members of the aristocratic 
von Ems family were among the most important mercenary leaders of 
their era.
