Langobardi (Lombards), a Germanic-Suevian tribe. Came from Bohemia and 
middle Germany soon after 488 and moved into the eastern part of the 
Waldviertel region and the western part of the Weinviertel region, 
were subjects of the Heruli but fought against them successfully in 
508 and expanded their rule to the east of modern Austria and the west 
of modern Hungary. They allied with the  Avars and destroyed the 
Gepidae kingdom. In 568 the Langobardi, under the reign of King 
Alboin, moved from Pannonia to Italy where they founded a kingdom with 
the capital of Pavia. In 774 the Frankish king Charlemagne became king 
of the Langobardi.
