b. Szprotawa, Poland (then Sprottau), Sept. 18, 1806, 
d. Vienna, Aug. 1, 1884, writer, dramatic adviser, theatre manager. 
Several times arrested as spokesman of the literary and political 
movement "Young Germany" in the Vormaerz pre-revolutionary period 
(1815-1848); 1848 member of the national assembly in Frankfurt; 
1849-1867 manager of the Vienna  Burgtheater, which experienced its 
golden age during his term of office (classical dramas, contemporary 
plays e.g. by F.  Grillparzer, and French comedies). When F.  Halm was 
appointed general manager of the court theatres, L. went to Leipzig. 
Founded the  Stadttheater, Wiener , 1872-1874 and 1875-1880 its 
manager. 1873 published the first edition of Grillparzer's works, 1874 
wrote a Grillparzer biography.
