Lazius (Laz), Wolfgang, b. Vienna, Oct. 31, 1514, d. Vienna, 
June 19, 1565, humanist, historiographer, cartographer, medical 
officer, physician in Wiener Neustadt. From 1541 professor at the 
School of Medicine of Vienna University, 8 times dean, twice rector; 
personal physician to the Emperor. Supervisor of imperial collections, 
travelled to collect scientific material. Major achievements in the 
fields of cartography and regional geography: drew maps of all 
Austrian territories, Bavaria, Hungary and Greece (not all preserved).

Vienna Austriae (oldest history of the city of Vienna), 4 
books, ed. by H. Arbemann, 1619; De gentium aliquot migrationibus, 
1557 (migration of peoples); Typi chorografici Provinciarum Austriae, 
1561 (11 maps with comments, oldest atlas of Austria, basically 
pioneer work for Austrian national history).
