Life Expectancy: Life expectancy and average age have increased 
rapidly during the past 100 years in Austria, as in all other 
industrialised countries. The average life expectancy at birth is the 
number of years a new-born child is likely to live. Statistics of life 
expectancy are compiled by the Austrian Central Statistical Office 
according to the register of deaths and are an important basis for the 
calculation of life insurance rates and pension schemes.
