Food Legislation in Austria: In the interest of health and consumer 
protection commerce in food, additives (e.g. flavourings), cosmetics 
and consumer goods (e.g. dishes and toys) is governed by the Food Law 
of 1975. Food regulations include reservations regarding the safety of 
certain foodstuffs, regulations concerning hygiene and the Austrian 
Food Standards =  Codex Alimentarius Austriacus) which is compiled by 
the Codex Commission, an advisory body of the Ministry of Health and 
Consumer Protection. The Ministry of Health and the provincial 
governors are supported by special supervisory bodies and expert  Food 
Testing Centres in the execution of food regulations. Gross violations 
of food regulations are punishable by law.
