Leinsdorf, Erich, b. Vienna, Feb. 4, 1912, d. Zurich 
(Switzerland), Sept. 11, 1993, conductor. Pupil of B.  Walter and A. 
Toscanini (Salzburg Festival 1934-1937). At the Metropolitan opera as 
a result of mediation by L.  Lehmann, 1937; musical director of the 
New York City Opera, 1956-1957, musical adviser of R. Bing at the 
Metropolitan Opera, 1957-1962. L. strove to introduce German works in 
the USA (e.g. R. Wagner) and conducted at the Vienna State Opera 
(e.g.1984 E. Krenek´s "Karl V").
