b. Koettmannsdorf (Carinthia), March 5, 1878, 
d. St. Martin near Klagenfurt (Carinthia), Jan. 26, 1937, philologist. 
1906 professor at the University of Freiburg (Switzerland), 1911 in 
Prague and 1920 in Wuerzburg (Germany), from 1921 fully paralysed; 
pioneering work in dialect geography and polyglot onomastics. Editor 
of Teuthonista, a periodical on German dialect research. His work was 
continued by his student E.  Kranzmayer.
