b. Lednice, Czech Republic (then Eisgrub), Oct. 5, 1840, 
d. Valtice, Czech Republic (then Feldsberg), Feb. 11, 1929, governing 
Prince of Liechtenstein; cousin of Prince Alfred  Liechtenstein and 
Prince Aloys  Liechtenstein. Under him the principality of 
Liechtenstein (which he ruled as Duke of Austria from 1858) developed 
ties to Switzerland rather than to Austria; he also organized and 
expanded the L. art gallery in Vienna, had L. castle in Lower Austria 
and Fischhorn castle in Salzburg restored, and commissioned H. von  
Ferstel to build a new building in the Vienna palace (9th district) in 
place of the Garden Belvedere. Commissioned the gardens in Lednice, 
Czech Republic (then Eisgrub). Important patron of the arts.
