b. Diciosanmartin (Rumania), May 28, 1923, composer. Came to Austria 
in 1956, since 1967 Austrian citizen. Free-lance composer, numerous 
lectureships (in Darmstadt, Stanford, Stockholm, Hamburg). A leading 
modernist composer. His stylistic development served as an example for 
a whole generation of composers and various schools. His style is 
characterized by strong chromatics and clusters, and often includes 
the use of electronic devices. L. developed new ways of composing in 
contrast to post-Webern serialism. Austrian Decoration for Science and 
Art 1987, Grand Austrian State Prize 1990.
