Ligist, Styria, market town in the district of Voitsberg, alt. 
392 m, pop. 3,086, area 34.64 km%%sup 2/%, south-west of 
Graz, in the West Styrian hill country, beginning of the "Schilcher" 
wine road. - Production of electronic components, commercial 
enterprises; due to favourable climatic conditions cultivation of wine 
("Schilcher") and fruit, cultivation of sweet chestnut trees, summer 
tourism. - In the town centre, Gothic parish church, enlarged in 1877, 
interior from 1877 and 1925, tombs of the Saurau family; Old Castle in 
ruins, New Castle (1817) with arcades, seat of the Knights of Malta 
commandery, museum of local history and culture. On the Dirtenberg 
mountain, prehistoric mountain settlement.
