commercial career, devoting himself at the same time to painting and 
historical, archaeological and anthropological studies. Tried to 
revive Germanic Antiquity in his historical novels inspired by F. Dahn 
("Pipara, die Germanin im Caesarenpurpur", 2 vols., 
1895).
