Loiben, Lower Austria, 2 villages in the district of Krems an der 
Donau, alt. 203 m, at the Danube, in the Wachau region. The 
villages of Ober- and Unterloiben are cadastral districts of the town 
Duernstein. -Fruit and wine growing (e.g. Dinstlgut). On November 11, 
1805 an Austrian-Russian army defeated the Napoleonic troops in the 
plain of Loiben (so-called French memorial in Ober.-Loiben, 1805). In 
Unter.-Loiben parish church of St. Quirin (originally Gothic hall 
church, rebuilt in the 15%%sup th/%  century with two naves), high 
altar with altar panel by M. J. Schmidt (1782), stone 
Pietà in the south porch (around 1415).
