Moenichkirchen, Lower Austria, market town in the district of
Neunkirchen, alt. 967 m, pop. 721, area 16.30 km%%sup 2/%,
bi-seasonal tourist resort (62,812 overnight stays) at the Wechsel
pass in the extreme southeast of Lower Austria. Panoramic view as far
as the Bucklige Welt hills, Upper Styria and south Burgenland -
weather station of the Central Institute for Meteorology and
Geodynamics). The writer A. Wildgans spent much time here (village of
"Uebelbach" in his verse epic "Kirbisch"). Late Gothic parish church
of St. Mary (15%%sup th/% century) with diamond net vaults and
splendid Baroque high altar (1720) with late Gothic statue of the
Virgin (15%%sup th/% century).
