Muehlbach am Hochkoenig, province of Salzburg, municipality in the
district of St. Johann, alt. 860 m, pop. 1.602, area
51.50 km%%sup 2/%, bi-seasonal tourist resort (309,322 overnight
stays) southeast of the Hochkoenig mountain. - Youth sports camp,
Rudolfschanze ski jump, Muehlbach power station (built 1909, 700 KWh),
Karbachalm cabin cable-car (1,591 m). Important prehistoric
mining centre from the early Bronze Age until the late Iron Age,
mainly exploitation of copper deposits of Mitterberg, northwest of
Muehlbach am Hochkoenig. Another mining site on the eastern slope of
Hochkeil mountain (1,782 m, both in the municipality of Muehlbach
am Hochkoenig). At first opencast mining (depressions), then also
underground mining (down to a depth of 170 m). About 200
prehistoric copper smelting sites have been discovered around
Muehlbach am Hochkoenig and Bischofshofen. Mining was resumed in 1829,
smelting of chalcopyrite concentrate from 1829 in Lend, 1840-1886/87
in Schmoelz near Muehlbach, owing to deforestation and natural
disasters transferred to Mitterberghuetten, mining continued until
1977. - Late Gothic parish church, enlarged and tower built in 1883;
mining museum and museum of local history and culture, circuit hiking
trail, old farmhouse types "Pongauer Paarhof" (18%%sup th/% century).
