Mint Marks: Ancient coins can for the most part be traced to a
particular mint on account of signs or marks designating a particular
mint master or mint, or on the basis of a specific configuration of
the coat of arms. By order of December 9, 1780 the coinage
officers were instructed to designate the mints where coins were
minted without exception by means of letters, i.e. A for Vienna, B for
Kremnitz, C for Prag, E for Karlsburg, F for Hall, G for Nagybanya, H
for Guenzburg. After the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867 the
lettering for Kremnitz was changed to KB (Koermoecz-Banya) and that
for Karlsburg to GYF (Gyula Fehervár).
