!!!Maße und Gewichte

Weights and Measures: Maria Theresia was the first to try and
standardize weights and measures in Austria, which showed great
regional variations, by a decree issued on July 14, 1756 (units of
length, for example, ranged from mile to fathom, foot and cubit). From
that time, several attempts were made to introduce a uniform system of
units for the whole of Austria. The metric system, which was developed
in France, was applied unofficially in some fields during the first
half of the 19%%sup th/% century; introduced by law in Austria on
July 23, 1871; in Hungary on January 1, 1876. Today weights and
measures fall under the competence of federal legislation.
