Maastricht Treaty: On February 7, 1992, the international 
agreement also known as the Treaty on  European Union was signed in 
Maastricht. It came into force on November 1, 1993. Goals 
are the intensification of the community bonds of the signing members 
and the creation of a basis for the completion of Economic and 
Monetary Union ( Euro) as well as for further stages of political 
integration in the areas of a Common Foreign and Security Policy 
(CFSP), justice and home affairs. Austria's accession to the EU on 
January 1, 1995 was based on the Maastricht Treaty. The 
Treaty of  Amsterdam constitutes the next step in the development of 
the European Union.
