Bozen/Bolzano, President of the Landtag and President of the Regional 
Council, 1957 to 1991 Chairman of the South Tyrolean People's Party 
SVP, 1960 to 1989 Landeshauptmann of South Tyrol, honorary chairman of 
the SVP, charismatic unifying presence in South Tyrol; a successful 
negotiator, ("Father of the South Tyrol Package"), he was instrumental 
in resolving the issue of the status of South Tyrol. Strong advocate 
of a United Europe of Regions.
