!!!Mais

Maize (Zea mays), originating in Central and South America, this plant
was brought to Austria in 1559, where it became known as "Turkish
corn" or "Kukuruz". Cross-breeds of dent or flint maize are used as
grain or silage maize (particularly common as livestock feed). In
addition, maize is used to produce starch and oil. About 179,465
hectares were planted with maize in 1994. By international standards
Austria belongs to the major corn-growing countries with average crop
yields ranging from 7 to 9 tons per hectare. In 1993 the overall crop
yield of grain maize totalled 1.5 million tons with the amount used
for self-supply decreasing slightly to 90%.
