b. Chernovtsy, Ukraine (then Czernowitz), Aug. 18, 1857,
d. Vienna, July 13, 1929, musicologist. Archivist of the Gesellschaft
der Musikfreunde in Vienna, from 1897 taught at the Vienna
Conservatory. Published the entire works of F. Schubert, J. Haydn
and J. Brahms. M. was also a composer (inter alia orthodox masses);
from 1879 friends with Brahms and his secretary. 1897 Honorary
doctorate of the University of Leipzig.
