!!!Mannlicher, Ferdinand von
Mannlicher, Ferdinand von, b. Mainz (Germany), Jan. 30, 1848,
d. Vienna, Jan. 20, 1904, weapons engineer. Constructed the
famous M. repetition rifle (orig. 11-mm, later 8-mm calibre) superior
in accuracy and rate of fire to all contemporary rifles ( guns) in
1886-1888. The 1895 model was part of the Austro-Hungarian
Army´s standard equipment in World War I, M. also invented the
M. 1888/90 used by the Austro-Hungarian cavalry. The rifles were
produced by the Oesterreichische Waffenfabriksgesellschaft founded by
J. Werndl in Steyr ( Steyr-Daimler-Puch AG) and Budapest.
