!!!Marbach an der Donau

Marbach an der Donau, Lower Austria, market town in the district of 
Melk, 240 m, pop. 1,620, area 10.65 km%%sup 2/%, situated on 
the River Danube near the place of pilgrimage of  Maria Taferl. The 
region around Marbach is referred to as Nibelungengau. Landing stage 
of the Danube Steamship Company (DDSG).- Recreational facilities, 
including a harbour for sports boats; social relief service; ferry 
service since 1983. Economy: furniture trade, sawing mill, car 
companies, summer tourism. First documented mention of Marbach an der 
Donau in 1269. - 19%%sup th/%  century parish church with a choir and 
a south tower both built in Gothic style, 17%%sup th/%  century nave, 
18%%sup th/%  century interior; manor (1575) with rooms added to the 
western part of the building by C. Holzmeister (1915-1917); office 
rooms in the town hall (mainly dating from the 16%%sup th/%  century) 
have stuccoed ceilings; pillory (first documented mention in 1629).
