b. Brixen, South Tirol (now Bressanone, Italy), Feb. 23, 1891, 
d. Berne, Switzerland, April 17, 1957, physicist. From 1926 
University Professor in Innsbruck, 1934-36 Visiting Professor at 
Oxford, then returned to Innsbruck; member of the resistance'' 
''during the Second World War.  His main achievement was the 
introduction of the "smallest number" as a constant, which is, 
however, now considered too high on the basis of new insights.
