!!!Maria Gail am Faakersee

Maria Gail am Faakersee, Carinthia, alt. 506 m, part of the 
eastern district of Villach; situated near the entry of the River Gail 
into the River Drau/Drava. - One of the oldest Carinthian churches; 
Maria Gail am Faakersee constituted one of the early Christian 
communities in the region around Villach, including the lower Gail 
Valley. Parish church (pilgrimage church), once fortified (some parts 
of the fortifications have been preserved). First documented mention 
of the parish of Maria Gail am Faakersee in 1090. Originally 
Romanesque church tower to which storeys were added in the Gothic 
style, 14%%sup th/%  century stone reliefs on the southern 
façade of the church, Gothic chancel (around 1415), remainders 
of 13%%sup th/%  century frescoes, as well as of Gothic frescoes, both 
created by the workshops at Villach, Early Baroque high altar (around 
1700) with a 16%%sup th/%  century statue of the Virgin Mary in the 
niche of the shrine. A Late Gothic winged altar created by the 
Friesach Workshops before 1520 is situated at the northern walls of 
the nave.
