b. Monza near Milan (Italy), Dec. 14, 1787, d. Verona (Italy), 
April 7, 1816, Empress of Austria, daughter of Archduke Ferdinand Karl 
of Habsburg-Este. 1808 became the third wife of her cousin, Emperor  
Franz II (I). Strongly opposed to Napoleon. M. L. was head of the 
so-called "War Party" at the Austrian Court. She met 
J. W. von Goethe 1810 in Karlsbad and was at the centre of 
society at the Vienna Congress 1814/15.
