Maria Plain, province of Salzburg, small rural settlement in the
district of Salzburg Land, alt. 530 m, place of pilgrimage on the
northern outskirts of the town of Salzburg, part of the municipality
of Bergheim. - Baroque pilgrimage church (built by G. A. Dario
between 1671 and 1674) with statues by T. Schwanthaler, 8 paintings by
M. J. Schmidt (around 1765), 17%%sup th/% century miraculous
painting depicting the Virgin with crowns and an aureola, 18%%sup th/%
century frame ornamented with rocaille. Superior´s house
(around 1675) with an impressive treasury. Various chapels are
situated east of the church, e.g. Chapel of Origin (Ursprungskapelle,
around 1650) housing a replica of the miraculous painting of the
Virgin, the Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre (Heiliges-Grab-Kapelle,
1692), the Chapel of Pains (Schmerzenskapelle, 1724-1734); Calvary
(Stations of the Cross, late 17%%sup th/% century); pilgrimage road
with 15 small wayside shrines dating from 1705.
