Mariastein, Tirol, municipality in the district of Kufstein, alt. 
575 m, pop. 192, area 2.37 km%%sup 2/%, place of pilgrimage 
situated north-west of the town of Woergl in the Lower Inn Valley. - 
Power plant (private), timber processing. Situated on a rock, the 
14%%sup th/%  century tower house was made a place of pilgrimage in 
the18%%sup th/%  century after numerous believers had experienced the 
grace of the Virgin there after praying in front of a statue created 
by the Pacher School. The castle which was added to the fortifications 
houses a splendid hall (Princes´ Hall) with a finely carved 
coffered ceiling, as well as a museum exhibiting a crown of the 
Habsburgs (Tiroler Erzherzogshut); originally Gothic Chapel of 
Miracles (redesigned between 1682 and 1685) housing the miraculous 
statue of the Virgin (around 1450), as well as an 18%%sup th/%  
century Rococo altar.
