Trademarks, Protection of, legal protection granted to any visible 
sign or device used by a business enterprise to identify its goods or 
services (service marks); in Austria granted through entry in the 
trademark register kept by the Patent Office. Protection of a 
registered trademark is granted for a period of ten years, which can 
be renewed indefinitely. First regulated by law in 1890, currently 
governed by the Trademark Act of 1970 (as amended).
