!!!Markt, Titel
Market (Markt), term originally referred to a town in which merchants
regularly put up their stalls on the market place. During the Middle
Ages the right to hold markets (fairs, weekly markets for vegetables,
fruits, cattle etc. ) was granted by the prince; later on by the
feudal lord. The villages which became market towns after 1849 did not
obtain any legal prerogatives by means of this title. Despite this
fact, however, many municipalities still strive to become a market
town (today the title is awarded by the respective provincial
government).
